Emprivo sells book directory Read Print for $1M

Website developer Emprivo is selling its online book directory Read Print for about $1 million, according to a source with knowledge of the deal. Our source wouldn’t name the buyer, but described it as a large private equity fund in Silicon Valley. Read Print’s catalogue consists of public domain books that users can view in a special pop-up “reading mode.” According to a posting on website auction service Flippa , Read Print receives 1.58 million pageviews per month from 453,000 unique visitors, and it earned $117,000 in profit during the past year. (The site is ad-supported.) Earlier this week, Time Magazine named Read Print one of the 50 best websites for 2010, praising its “rich selection of books, poems, plays and short stories.” We’re told that the company is working on an advertising network. It has recruited venture capitalists to back the network, and they wanted Emprivo to sell Read Print to focus exclusively on the advertising product. The buyer, meanwhile, wants to turn Read Print into an app store and community around books. Emprivo declined to comment on the deal.

After Twitter spent its formative years just trying to stay operational , the San Francisco-based microblogging service seems to be entering a new creative period. Twitter wants you to make more friends — but the fast-growing startup also seems to be finding smarter ways to cultivate allies. The site’s developers have spent the last week trying out a number of new features on the homepage and users’ profile pages, in addition to  debuting an official Tweet button to make it easy to share Twitter posts on other websites. Twitter hasn’t entirely escaped its unstable past: Its Tweet button  accidentally made websites that had implemented it inaccessible shortly after its rollout

San Francisco startup Rapportive announced today that it has enlisted a long list of well-known investors as part of a seed round of more than $1 million. Given Rapportive’s aim to provide relevant information about your contacts in Gmail, the most impressive person on that list is probably Gmail creator Paul Buchheit. He’s an angel investor and now a Facebook employee via the acquisition of his company FriendFeed. There are a number of other startups built around the goal of providing more relevant data about your email contacts — in Rapportive’s case that data include your contact’s photos, location, and LinkedIn profile. Chief executive and cofounder Rahul Vohra (pictured) said Rapportive is distinguished from other products by being genuinely easy-to-use and beautiful

Perfect Market opens The Vault to help newspapers make money

It has become a cliche that newspapers are stumbling in their transition to the Web, largely because they just can’t make as much money from their websites as they can from print. A startup called Perfect Market is unveiling a tool today aimed at changing that. Dubbed The Vault, the new service is basically the data and analytics side of Perfect Market’s services. The Altadena, Calif., company already works with newspapers like The Los Angeles Times and The Baltimore Sun to optimize stories for search engines, then to deliver customized news pages for visitors who come in from clicking on search results. The idea is that those visitors from search are very different from visitors who read the newspaper every day, so Perfect Market will strip pretty much everything away from the page except for the story and the ads. Even more important from a revenue point of venue, it will deliver ads that are specifically targeted towards that search.

Amazon beefing up MP3 store — The major online retailer seems to be onboarding a bunch of new employees to work on its music tools, perhaps indicating that a major relaunch is in the works?
