Apple released Safari version 5.0.1 today, and while the version number may seem minor, it’s actually a fairly important update since it finally brings extensions to the web browser. Apple previously showed off its extensions last month, and Safari 5 users were able to get some early extensions from other sites, but this marks the first full release for extensions on the web browser. Today also marks the unveiling of Apple’s Extensions Gallery , which is basically a prettier version of the extension repositories created by Google and Mozilla. Mozilla’s Firefox was the first web browser to embrace the notion of extensions — small add-ons that can greatly increase the functionality of a browser — and earlier this year Google’s Chrome browser also received extension functionality . I always found it easier to go with Firefox or Chrome on my desktop and the default browser on my Droid. Well that certainly has changed (at least with the Droid) now that Opera Mini 5.1 has officially been stripped of its beta tags and is ready for download on the Android market. If you have tried any of the previous versions of the beta, you probably uninstalled it pretty quickly like I did. However, this new update adds a bit more functionality that ties the bow on Opera Mini and makes it a very very good browser alternative

Well, it’s not exactly here for those who want a reliable browser that won’t cause them any issues.? The first beta for Firefox 4 is now ready for download, giving early adopters a chance to test out the browser, and others to just see what’d coming in the next few months. There are a few aesthetic changes in Firefox 4, specifically that tabs have been moved to the top of the window, though not on the Mac and Linux versions just yet.? The result is something more Chrome-like that can be switched byt he user if they so choose.? Under the hood, Firefox adds support for many HTML5 elements, including WebM.? Some aspects of HTML5, like fullscreen video aren’t usable yet, but are coming soon, presumably in a future beta.? Other features include hardware-accelerated HD video and better extension support with Jetpack. This is just the first of what will likely be several betas before the final version of Firefox 4 is released.? The official release is slated for later this year.? The fact that the first beta is out now is a good idea on Mozilla’s part.? The Firefox browser has been losing ground to Chrome for quite some time now, and the next version looks to be gunning for Google’s browser.? Firefox 4 Beta 1 up for download
Starting today, you can download Firefox 4 Beta 1 for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux . Released a week past its end of June deadline, this new iteration of the browser is still shaky in some areas, but mostly stable enough for regular use. The biggest improvement between Firefox 3 versions and the newest download is speed. In order to compete with blazing fast releases of Google’s Chrome (which has stolen some of Mozilla’s market share), Safari and even Opera, Firefox has had to turbocharge its page load times. Early reports find that Firefox 4 easily keeps up with these browsers and should rival Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 9 when it becomes available before the end of 2010. Mozilla says the final version of the new browser should be even faster. This beta version represents a major shift in appearance for Firefox.
