Twitter: 300,000 apps, but none of them matter

September 3rd, 2010 Lialoppocajal No comments

Twitter CEO Ev Williams posted a blog entry Thursday with an update on the microblogging service’s usage, which continues to grow sharply. More interesting than the numbers, though, was the message written between the lines: Twitter now has 145 million monthly users, and for the marketers who want to reach them, Twitter is the only way to go. The numbers don’t lie. Third-party developers, who played a large role in Twitter’s early growth and buzz, just don’t matter

OnLive announces beta test for server gaming over Wi-Fi connections

September 2nd, 2010 birdcagescheapj2 No comments

OnLive is announcing today that it has begun a beta test to let gamers use its games-on-demand service over wireless networking connections. As a technical achievement, that’s pretty cool. OnLive runs its games in the cloud, using beefy servers with graphics processing capability and compression technology that can send the game data back to the user in real time. The result is that the server-based game service feels like a user is playing a game that is stored and processed on the user’s own computer. The cloud-based service offers benefits such as the ability to play demanding games on low-end hardware and the ability to log into the service from any machine

New iPod touch with Retina Display announced

September 1st, 2010 devxxsun No comments

Section: Apple , Audio , Portable Audio , Video , Portable Video We all knew it was coming, an iPod touch with a Retina Display like the current iPhone.? To make it even better, though, Apple has added just about everything but the phone to the new iPod touch. The latest touch will come not only with the Retina Display, but with a front-facing camera for FaceTime, and a back-facing camera as well.? Steve Jobs only mentioned HD video recording for the iPod touch, but it would make sense that it could also take photos, unless Apple doesn’t want to add that feature.? It will also contain the Game Center app for competitive gaming, which of course, is also coming to iOS 4.1 with all other devices.? Despite being even thinner than the third generation iPod touch, the new version will tout 40 hours of music playback, but will likely not get that with video and apps running. The new iPod touch will ship in 8, 32 and 64 GB models.? They will sell for $229, $299, and $399, respectively.? They will go up for pre-order today, and will start shipping next month. Apple announces all-new designs for its iPod music players

September 1st, 2010 januszkiny No comments

In what seemed like a tacit admission that its iconic iPod, famed for its simplicity and standout design, had strayed off course,  Apple released all-new designs for its entire lineup of music players. The announcement was the first in a press conference staged by CEO Steve Jobs today at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, where Apple frequently holds its fall announcements. The event was the subject of intense speculation, as Apple is viewed as the leader in mobile technology innovation. Apple has sold 275 million iPods to date, Jobs noted, but said Apple never rests on its laurels. For its fourth-generation iPod Shuffle, Apple reversed course from its previous buttonless design, launching a throwback version with buttons, voice controls, and playlists. It will come in five colors and sell for $49 for 2 gigabytes of storage
