Big surprise: Spammers find their way into Apple’s Ping social network

September 3rd, 2010 death12 No comments

Now that we’re little more than a day from the launch of Apple’s social network Ping , reports are coming in that spammers are beginning to target the service — surprising no one. The biggest scam right now appears to be an offer for free iPhones which is popping up on many high profile Ping accounts, reports MacRumors . Even though Apple has said that it has 160 million iTunes accounts tied to credit cards, you can also easily create an account without one — which opens the doors for spammers to flood the service. The security software company Sophos weighed in on the issue in a blog post .

BlackBerry has 60 days to prove itself before India enforces ban

August 30th, 2010 knetter No comments

Research in Motion avoided a ban today on its BlackBerry services in India by beginning a 60-day security test to see whether Indian officials can tap its BlackBerry Messenger and enterprise email services. Indian BlackBerry users make up about 2 percent of the company’s 46 million users, according to the Bloomberg report, so a ban in India might not place that large of a monetary dent in the company that raked in $768 million in its last quarter, according to its most recent quarterly statement .

Section: Computers , Security , Features Security researchers say the Rustock botnet has ended its experimenting with transport layer security. It’s believed the botherders tried it as a way of hiding their activity but decided the burden it placed on bandwidth and processing speed was too great. The botnet is currently responsible for over 40% of the world’s spam volume, most of it pharmaceutical spam hawking the fake prescription drugs sold by the infamous Canadian Pharmacy group. The Russian Mafia is the group’s suspected ringleader. By the way, in case you are ever the least bit tempted to buy prescription drugs from a Canadian Pharmacy site, DON’T

San Diego Apple Store robbed, 12 iPhones taken

August 27th, 2010 No comments

Just two weeks ago we reported a robbery at the Knox Street Apple Store in Dallas and today it appears that the University Towne Apple Store in San Diego , California was the scene of a late-night smash-and-grab. In the deep hours of the night around 4:20 AM two robbers dressed in jeans and hoodies smashed down the store’s iconic glass doors and made out with 12 display iPhones. There is no word on the depth of the investigation and if the criminals have been apprehended as of yet. One thing that seems odd is that the Apple Store is located at a mall yet the criminals were able to get through

Intel ’s purchase of security software firm McAfee today for $7.68 billion in cash raises the question: what the heck is Intel buying a software company for? HP to buy software security company Fortify

August 17th, 2010 birdcagescheapj2 No comments

HP announced this morning that it’s acquiring Fortify , a company that specializes in software security. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. The purchase would allow HP to offer a way for businesses to “reduce business risk, meet compliance regulations and protect against malicious application attacks by integrating security assurance.” It would also give customers the best of both worlds in software security — Fortify specializes in static application security analysis (scanning software for flaws or malicious code before deploying), while HP is more familiar with dynamic security analysis (scanning code while its live). The two companies previously worked together on Hybrid 2.0 (PDF link) — which HP calls “The Next Generation of Integrate Static and Dynamic Security Analysis.” The union will push development of this technology even further. HP plans to run the company as a standalone unit, and it will eventually be integrated into its Software and Solutions business. Based in San Mateo, Calif., Fortify was founded in 2003, and received initial funding by Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield and Byers. Tags: Hybrid 2.0 , security Companies: Fortify , Hp
