Section: Communications , VoIP A new posting over at the Skype Blog has formally introduced the latest in terms of Skype for Windows—Skype 5.0, which is still in beta (currently beta 2) but will allow for group video calling with up to 10 people. Of course, the catch with that is you will need all of those 10 people to be running the same beta edition, which that alone could prove to be a daunting task. But just in case, you can also expect to find a “refreshed user interface” as well as “better stability and quality” in this latest Skype for Windows beta. Plex.app has been a fantastic media center option for Macs for a few years and as of last week, also on iOS devices . Interestingly, Plex today announced a huge deal with LG which will have the Plex software built into future LG HDTV displays, free of charge (except LG obviously has to cover the cost of additional hardware). At some point in the future, Plex will be ported to Windows (how about that!) as well. That is an interesting option vs. Apple and GoogleTV’s especially with the Plex iOS client running around and Plex’s ability to do 1080P, Flash and non-H.264 format videos. Great news for Elan, Cayce and the guys at Plex! Press release below: PLEX TO ENABLE NEXT GENERATION OF NETCASTTM CONNECTED TVs San Francisco, CA & Berlin, Germany (IFA) – September 3, 2010 – Today, Plex ( www.plexapp.com ), a leading software provider of an open platform for media management and consumption, announced the availability of the newest version of its service.

Skype just released the latest beta version of its Skype 5 Windows client – which along with a more streamlined interface and the usual bug fixes, adds one major new feature: the ability to video chat with up to 10 people. The internet calling service has made major leaps in its video calling technology over the past few months. At the beginning of the year, video chats were limited to two people — the same as when the service launched in 2003. In May, it released a Windows beta client that supported five-person video chat, which I argued would help make group video chat the next killer webcam feature . Competing video chat services like Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, and Google’s Gmail video chat only allow for two-person conferences.

Hot on the heels of Apple’s 99 cent episode renting announcement, Amazon has matched Apple by offering those same episodes for the same price. It isn’t immediately clear if these are for permanent download or just for streaming like AppleTV. (it says “Own Episodes” but I think only Windows and Tivo can download for offline viewing). Section: Computers , Software / Applications When Microsoft first launched Windows 7, it sold a limited number of Family Packs for the OS.? The Family Packs have since been long sold-out, but now Microsoft is bringing them back, but again only for a limited run. The Windows 7 Family Pack gives you three licenses to put on as many computers.? The one catch is that the package only gives your three upgrades to WIndows 7 Home Premium, meaning you have to have XP or Vista installed on a computer to upgrade them.? You can’t use the Family Pack on a completely fresh computer, which is a shame, but can be easily worked around by just installing an older OS on the box first. The Family Pack will be available again on October 3 at retailers and online at the Microsoft Store.? Again, like last time, this is a limited time thing, it would seem.? Once their sold out, we don’t know when Microsoft will bring the bundle out again.? It would seem to make sense that Microsoft would keep the package around for those who want it, it is the best deal on the OS it would seem, and there would be a lot of people who want it.? Although, by only offering it for a limited time, and not saying how long that time period is, it is possible it could drive up sales and adoption of Windows 7.? Despite the fact that more people are using 7 over Vista, Microsoft still needs to get people off of XP and onto 7, and offering a good deal for a short period of time is a good way to drive up that demand
